CIS power people are ready to start working on a feasibility study of possible parallel operations of the CIS energy systems and the unified energy system of Europe.
Anatoly Chubais, Chairman of the RAO UES of Russia Board of Directors, told a press conference in Baku that seven CIS countries had signed Tuesday during the CIS Electric Power Council session an agreement defining instruments of their cooperation with authorized European countries regarding preparation for aligning the operations of the two power systems.
“CIS power people are thus ready to sign a similar agreement with their European counterparts and then start preparing together for a feasibility study,” Chubais noted.
“We estimate the work will take at least two years”, Chubais said.
Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and twelve European countries, as well as Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, will participate in the feasibility study.
According to A. Chubais, Kazakhstan and several other countries on the CIS Electric Power Council expressed their interest in participating in the work.
Parallel operations of the energy systems imply their electrical frequency synchronization to allow free electric crossflows along interstate high-voltage power lines. Synchronization will significantly enhance the unified energy system reliability by providing mutual support in the wintertime or emergency situations.
