IES-Holding's Urals Generation Division has begun heating season, one of the first in Russia. Heat consumers in the town of Vorkuta, located 160 km north of the Polar circle, received heat on 27 August 2009, in compliance with a decree of the head of Vorkuta administration. Arctic climatic conditions set stringent requirements to the reliability of Vorkuta's heat supply system. Before the beginning of heating season, large-scale maintenance works were carried out at power generating plants. Thus, 18 boilers, 7 turbines and a lot of other equipment were repaired at HPP-1, HPP-2 and at the central boiler plant. Operational readiness of Vorkuta's heat supply system is under a strict control. HPP-2 has an above-ground trunk pipeline which goes through a marshland and requires annual replacement of extensive length of pipelines because of subsidence of ground. According to Vyacheslav Dyakonov, Technical Director and Chief Engineer of Vorkuta HPP, all tasks connected with preparation for heating season set by the management of IES-Holding's Urals Generation Division have been successfully fulfilled. The stock of available fuel resources and operational readiness of power generating equipment and heat supply system will allow reliable operation under the most unfavorable climatic conditions. |
